💪 Muscle is Queen 👸
Whether our goals are performance related goals or body composition goals, muscle is our friend and muscle is always our focus!
Performance related goals
Our goals that are related to the things we can do with our body. Your goals might involve 3 sets of push ups on your toes. Or unassisted chin ups. Or they might be chasing down that 100kg deadlift or squatting your body weight to full range.
Body composition goal
Goals that are associated with the composition of our body. Whether that be to lose body fat, gain weight, change the shape of our body or build a set of hamstrings to support strength goals……we all have different things we are chasing.
Muscle plays a vital role in health at all stages in our life. It is the foundation of a strong healthy body.
Why muscle is important in strength and performance goals
Muscular strength refers to the amount of force a muscle can produce with a single maximal effort. The size of the muscle and the ratio of fast-twitch (more specific to strength) and slow-twitch fibres (more specific to endurance sports) in that muscle is one component that influences force production. Another factor is neural connection and neural firing. This is both responsible for and what we call “muscle contraction”. The more muscle we have along with optimal firing patterns (movement patterns) and good support via joints, bones, ligaments and tendons are all key components in building strength.
Without muscle we cannot produce force to push a desired weight.
Why muscle is important in body composition goals
Muscle mass is a major component of your fat-free mass. Muscle is a tissue just like fat is a tissue. We can look to increase muscle mass with training efforts alongside reducing body fat with nutrition and training efforts. Muscle mass has a huge positive impact on your metabolism or “metabolic rate” which, in part, is how many calories your body burns for energy. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn, even when you’re not exercising.
